With landfill biogas cogeneration ab becomes a leader in Brazil
The first of the two big cogeneration sites powered by landfill biogas has been inaugurated. The two plants are the result of efforts by the local government and Solvì – a partner of AB and the leader of ecological treatment of waste in Brazil. Located in Minas do Leao (Rio Grande do Sul), the system mainly uses urban waste from the city of Porto Alegre (3,500 tons per day) and, operating at full capacity, generates 8.5 megawatts of electricity serving the energy needs of more than 200,000 people. AB has made an important contribution to the energy efficiency of Brazil, a symbolic country in the fight for environmental protection. Six 6 Ecomax® 14BIO plants are already in operation on the site. The plant mainly uses urban waste from the city of Porto Alegre (3,500 tons per day) and, operating at full capacity, generates 8.5 megawatts of electricity serving the energy needs of more than 200,000 people. Solvì, the company which is the leader of ecological treatment of waste in Brazil, has invested about 30 million Reals (about 8.4 million Euros) in this area. It has also supported several activities, including the installation of the AB cogeneration plant, which is the shining star of the entire complex. Solvì has also commissioned for AB to construct cells for connection to the medium voltage network, as well as to service both for this plant and the second that is currently under construction. As José Ivo Sartori, the State Governor, stressed during his inauguration speech, the recently inaugurated landfill and cogeneration plants will bring several benefits to the environment and local populations. They greatly reduce greenhouse gas emission, thus protecting the local flora and fauna; they do not generate smells; they produce power and heat from renewable sources; they do not alter the local topography; they dispose of large amounts of waste and do not pollute aquifers. “Following this first success, we are working on the biggest job order our company has ever received in the landfill sector” said Angelo Baronchelli, AB’s President. “In short, we will create the largest landfill gas cogeneration site in the world: 21 Ecomax® 14BIO systems (about 30 MW) will be installed in Caieiras, in the San Paolo region. I am particularly proud of the great value that this system brings to the local area, the environment and the population, just as I am proud to have been able to give the world our experience and Italian know-how”.
