Elevion Group and AB Join Forces for Five New Biomethane Plants in Italy: Expected Reduction of 50,000 Tons of CO₂ Emissions.

11 June 2025

Orzinuovi (BS), June 11, 2025 – Elevion Group, a leading European provider of end-to-end decarbonization and higher energy efficiency solutions, and AB, a global leader in sustainable energy solutions, have announced the signing of a framework agreement for the construction and maintenance of five biogas upgrading plants to biomethane in the regions of Emilia-Romagna, and Lombardy. The project is expected to have a significant environmental impact, with an estimated annual savings of 50,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent.

Biomethane is an increasingly crucial renewable energy source in Italy’s energy transition, contributing to European strategic energy autonomy. According to the Italian Biogas Consortium (CIB), national production currently stands at around 750 million standard cubic meters (Smc) per year, with a target of 1.8 billion supported by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), and a goal of reaching 5 billion Smc by 2030—80% of which will come from agricultural sources.

The agreement between AB and Elevion Group marks one of the most significant collaborations in the Italian biomethane sector. It includes five plants (three with a capacity of 350 Smc/h, one at 450 Smc/h, and one at 900 Smc/h), all equipped with AB's BIOCH4NGE® membrane upgrading technology, known for its high selectivity. Each plant will also be outfitted with auxiliary systems for complete gas treatment and injection into the national grid. The scope of work includes engineering, commissioning, and full-service maintenance.

“For AB, this is another important step toward contributing to the goals of Italy’s National Energy and Climate Plan, particularly in the biomethane sector,” said Angelo Baronchelli, Chairman of AB. “We are proud to support Elevion Group with AB’s cutting-edge technology to ensure high performance and long operational life for these plants.”

“We have already adopted BIOCH4NGE® technology for our first certified biomethane plant,” says Claudio Sanna, CEO of Elevion Group | ITALY. “We chose to strengthen our partnership with AB due to the reliability of their service and the extensive reach of their support network—key factors in ensuring the continuity of our operations and achieving the goals of our industrial plan.”

The installations will be located on agricultural sites already equipped with biogas infrastructure, enabling a fast and sustainable conversion. The biomethane will be produced from agricultural by-products and livestock waste sourced locally from certified suppliers, in line with integrated supply chain principles, circular economy practices, and decarbonization goals.

This agreement is part of Elevion Group’s ongoing expansion in the bioenergy sector in Italy. By 2026, the Group aims to reach an hourly production capacity of 5,400 Smc of biomethane—equivalent to 42.5 million Smc per year—to support the decarbonization of energy-intensive industrial processes.
